How To Succeed through Self Development|QUICK INFO|berita ...

The primary purpose of life is self development. To this effect, they advise everyone to ensure that they are always trying to improve themselves.Just by trying to make yourself better, you would improve your chances of success. This is the best proof that self improvement should be considered one of the prime purposes of existence.

Still, how can self improvement be made a part of your daily life? The answer is simply in small steps. With small steps you would slowly be able to move towards perfection. Here are some ideas that will help you make self improvement a part of your everyday life.

Consider how you have lived your life so far

The first step towards self improvement is to evaluate where you are in life. This implies that you should take into account all your past successes and failures. The key is to analyze the reasons behind your successes and defeats.

You would know yourself a little more because of this.As per numerous psychology experts, understanding the problem is crucial when it comes to changing something in yourself. This is why it is very significant for you to evaluate your life with respect to your successes and defeats.

Why understanding your strengths and weaknesses is so crucial

While evaluating your life would allow you to know yourself, you should try to focus on your qualities and flaws more.Making your strengths stronger and your weaknesses weaker is what self improvement is all about. If you know your strengths and weaknesses, you would be able to make better choices in life.

Making the proper choices in life would help you succeed more often. For instance, every time you come across a task or a confrontation, knowing your qualities and flaws would help you determine whether you should take it on or walk away from it.

Assess the influences of individuals around you

Self improvement is not just about the way you behave but also about how the individuals around you influence you. This means that the people surrounding you should also be given importance in terms of whether they help you or hinder you. Thus, you should avoid people with bad influences around you.

The appropriate individual can inspire you to greater heights.Similarly, even if you are a genius, the wrong type of people can keep you from achieving even the small things in life.

Learn to practice moderation in life

Many people try to work all the time. They think that if they can dedicate as much time to work as they can they would succeed. This is not the right way because focusing on quantity would keep you from attaining quality.

Similarly, if you focus on relaxing more than working then you would never find success in life. This implies that moderation in life is important. In fact, it is important for you to practice moderation with small things like eating and sleeping.

Ensure that you have an optimistic approach in life

Another secret of success is an optimistic approach.Individuals do not give enough importance to an optimistic approach. If you can make yourself have a positive mindset in life, you would find that things come easier to you. A positive mindset makes tough challenges easy.

Syria says it will stop fighting by UN deadline

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syria promised to comply with a U.N.-brokered cease-fire beginning Thursday but carved out an important condition ? that the regime still has a right to defend itself against the terrorists that it says are behind the country's year-old uprising.

The statement Wednesday offered a glimmer of hope that a peace initiative by special envoy Kofi Annan could help calm the conflict, which has killed some 9,000 people. But the regime still has ample room to maneuver.

In comments carried on the state-run news agency, Syria said the army has successfully fought off "armed terrorist groups" and reasserted state authority across the country.

"A decision has been taken to stop these missions as of the morning of Thursday, April 12, 2012," the statement said, adding: "Our armed forces are ready to repulse any aggression carried out by the armed terrorist groups against civilians or troops."

The government denies that it is facing an uprising by Syrians who want to dislodge the authoritarian family dynasty that has ruled the country for more than four decades. Instead, the regime says, terrorists are carrying out a foreign conspiracy to destroy Syria.

Because the regime has treated any sign of dissent as a provocation, there are only dim hopes for an abrupt end to the bloodshed.

The White House cautioned that President Bashar Assad's regime has reneged on promises to stop the violence in the past.

"What is important to remember is that we judge the Assad's regime by its actions and not by their promises, because their promises have proven so frequently in the past to be empty," White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters in Washington.

Annan is scheduled to brief the U.N. Security Council on Thursday by videoconference from Geneva.

Many activists predict that huge numbers of protesters would flood the streets if Assad fully complies with the agreement and pulls his forces back to barracks. But Syria has ways to maintain authority even without the military, in the form of pro-regime gunmen called "shabiha" and the fiercely loyal and pervasive security apparatus.

Over the course of the uprising, the military crackdown succeeded in preventing protesters from recreating the fervor of Egypt's Tahrir Square, where hundreds of thousands of people camped out in a powerful show of dissent that drove longtime leader Hosni Mubarak from power.

In the early days of the Syrian rebellion, Syrian forces used tanks, snipers and machine guns on peaceful protesters, driving many of them to take up arms. Since then, the uprising has transformed into an armed insurgency. Many fear the conflict could soon become a civil war.

The rebel Free Syrian Army, a fighting force determined to bring down Assad, has said it will abide by the cease-fire Thursday. But the opposition is not well organized, and there are growing fears of groups looking to exploit the chaos.

Annan said Wednesday that he is hopeful both sides will abide by their agreement.

"We've been in touch with them (Syrian rebels) and have had positive answers from them," Annan said, speaking on a visit to Iran. "We should see a much improved situation on the ground."

Western powers have pinned their hopes on Annan's plan, in part because they are running out of options. The U.N. has ruled out any military intervention of the type that helped bring down Libya's Moammar Gadhafi, and several rounds of sanctions and other attempts to isolate Assad have done little to stop the bloodshed.

"The West or Arab states have very little leverage over Syria, and the one thing which would certainly weaken the regime ? which is some form of military intervention ? is the one policy that is not being considered," said David Hartwell, senior Middle East analyst at the defense and intelligence group IHS Jane's.

Saudi Arabia and Qatar have called for arming the rebels, but even if they follow through there is no guarantee that such efforts could cripple Assad's well-armed regime.

Asked what steps the U.S. could take if the deal collapses, Carney, the White House spokesman, cited humanitarian and other non-lethal assistance and further sanctions.

The conflict is among the most explosive of the Arab Spring, in part because of Syria's web of allegiances to powerful forces including Lebanon's Hezbollah and Shiite powerhouse Iran.

Annan's peace plan called for Syria to withdraw its forces on Tuesday, followed by a full cease-fire by 6 a.m. Thursday. The halt in fighting would then pave the way for an observer mission and talks between both sides over the country's future.

Syria disregarded the Tuesday deadline and was still attacking its opponents Wednesday with tanks and mortar fire. The government has escalated military attacks in recent weeks, prompting accusations that Assad was using the peace plan as cover for more violence.

It was unclear if Wednesday's promise to comply with the truce meant Syria would pull back its troops or just stop its offensives.

But Annan welcomed it and said he will work with the Syrian government to implement his six-point plan to end the bloodshed.

"The joint special envoy looks forward to the continue support of relevant countries in this regard," said Annan's spokesman, Ahmad Fawzi.

Annan was in Iran ? Syria's key regional ally ? to press for support for his peace plan.

"Iran, given its special relations with Syria, can be part of the solution," Annan said during a news conference in Tehran. "The geopolitical location of Syria is such that any miscalculation and error can have unimaginable consequences."

Annan earlier secured the backing of Russia and China, which have given Assad a significant layer of protection by blocking strong action against the regime at the U.N. Security Council. Those two countries fear a resolution condemning Assad might open the door to possible NATO airstrikes on Syria, recalling the military campaign in Libya.

Despite Wednesday's diplomatic push, activists reported more violence.

Activists said the central city of Homs was under siege.

Tarek Badrakhan, a resident of Homs, said the regime has been shelling restive areas for weeks, including the rebel-held neighborhood of Khaldiyeh.

"This city of Homs is a ghost city today and Khaldiyeh in particular is mostly destroyed," he told The Associated Press. "We are being subjected to intense shelling. Yesterday and today were the worst days. Reconnaissance planes are flying overhead to locate targets."

The wounded were being treated inside homes after a makeshift hospital was destroyed earlier this week. Dozens of corpses that were being kept inside the clinic had to be buried in a public garden, he said.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights activist group reported clashes in the Barada Valley region on the outskirts of Damascus between troops and army defectors as government forces stormed the area. The Observatory said dozens of people were wounded.

Activist Fares Mohammed said two people were killed there.

"Many of the wounded lost limbs as a result of shelling by tanks," he said.

Syrian state-run news agency SANA said gunmen shot and killed army Brig. Gen. Jamal Khaled in the Damascus suburb of Aqraba on Wednesday morning. It added that Khaled's driver, a soldier, was also killed in the attack.

Bassam Imadi, a member of the opposition Syrian National Council, said he had no faith in the Annan initiative to stop the bloodshed.

"Peace will never come to this country before this regime is overthrown ? that is something for sure," Imadi said. "The regime is using all these breaks, those initiatives, those diplomatic and political solutions only to try and finish the uprising."

Marketing Luxury Real Estate: Message on the Bottle - Real Estate ...

As a luxury real estate marketing professional you can have a superior value proposition, but will you be able to capture the attention of your ideal client? As the world becomes more democratized with technology, the competition for attention has become one of the biggest marketing challenges. First, you have to capture the attention of your ideal clients, (so they can hear you loud and clear above the din of your competition), and then you have to hold on to it.

Here is a clear example from the world of wine. According to 2009 figures, over 20 billion bottles of wine were produced globally. Competition for attention is fierce. We recently discovered two Spanish wines produced by La Granja (the farm) 360 from Spain. Modestly priced at $3.99 and $4.99 a bottle, it is thriving in sales side by side with similarly priced California wines (California makes 90% of wines in the US). What makes is different is its message on the bottle.

Both wines have eye catching labels. The first bottle pictured above is a 50/50 blend of Tempranillo and Garnacha grapes. Wine connoisseurs describe it as, ?An everyday drinking soft rounded juicy red wine, with rich ripe raspberry flavors, and great match for barbecue, roasted pork chops, spare ribs, sausages, grilled vegetables and cheeses.? The ordinary zebra has made itself extraordinary by painting his back end in red!

The second is a Syrah with a 100% juice Syrah grapes, planted for the first time in this region. Unlike its North American cousins, this wine is not jammy. Here is the review, ?It's ripe with blackberry-fresh-off-the-bramble flavor with hints of dried herbs and well-balanced tannins. And as the label of the rooster with the golden egg portends, this wine is provocatively irreverent... it keeps you pouring.? The rooster is crowing about producing a golden egg!

Like wine there may be several comparable luxury real estate marketing professional in your market place. This is where graphics and design come into play. Graphics are a shortcut to get the message across of how you are different, and to be great it has to convey your message at a glance.

Zip code as important as genetic code in childhood obesity

ScienceDaily (Apr. 10, 2012) ? Nearly 18 percent of U.S. school-aged children and adolescents are obese, as the rate of childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years. The prevalence of obesity puts children at greater risk of developing heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke and other illnesses, and of suffering severe obesity as adults. New study results indicate that where a child lives, including factors such as the neighborhood's walkability, proximity to higher quality parks, and access to healthy food, has an important effect on obesity rates. Researchers found that children living in neighborhoods with favorable neighborhood environment attributes had 59 percent lower odds of being obese.

"Obesogenic Neighborhood Environments, Child and Parent Obesity: The Neighborhood Impact on Kids Study" was published in a special theme issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. Led by Brian Saelens, PhD, of Seattle Children's Research Institute, this is among the first neighborhood environment studies to look at a combination of nutrition and physical activity environments and to assess children and their parents. It is also among the largest studies of its kind to use objective geographic information system (GIS) data to examine the physical activity and healthy food option attributes of a neighborhood related to obesity.

Researchers used GIS to assess Seattle and San Diego area neighborhoods' nutrition and physical activity environments. Nutrition environments were defined based on supermarket availability and concentration of fast food restaurants. Physical activity environments were defined based on environmental factors related to neighborhood walkability and at least one park with more or better amenities for children. Kids that lived in neighborhoods that were poorer in physical activity and nutrition environment had the highest rates of obesity -- almost 16 percent -- in the study. This figure is similar to the national average. On the flip side, only eight percent of children were obese in neighborhoods where physical activity and nutrition environments were positive.

"People think of childhood obesity and immediately think about an individual's physical activity and nutrition behaviors, but they do not necessarily equate obesity with where people live," said Dr. Saelens, who is also a professor of pediatrics at the University of Washington. "Everyone from parents to policymakers should pay more attention to zip codes because they could have a big impact on weight."

Fast food may not be as easy to come by in the Seattle area, based on the study. There were 3,474 fast food locations in San Diego County, as compared to 1,660 in King County, Wash. On a county-level block group average basis, San Diego had 2.0 fast food locations per block group, and King County had 1.1.

Numerous national health organizations have identified neighborhood environment and built environment, including healthy food and physical activity opportunities, as important factors in childhood obesity, including the Institute of Medicine and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "Our data support recommendations from these groups that we need to change our environments to make them more supportive of physical activity and nutrition," said Saelens.

(AP) ? Mobs with iron rods and sticks ransacked a supermarket belonging to a major Shiite-owned business group Wednesday, a company official said, as part of a spike in violence in the Gulf nation in retaliation for a bomb attack on police.

The attack appeared linked to a wave of reprisals and intimidation by suspected Sunni groups angered by the 14-month-old uprising by Bahrain's Shiite majority seeking to weaken the powers of the kingdom's Sunni monarchy.

The growing unrest, which has included vigilante-style attacks in some Shiite areas, also could escalate worries by Formula One teams about whether to participate in the April 22 Bahrain Grand Prix. The race was called off last year amid security fears and Bahrain's leaders are pushing hard to bring back the event as a sign of stability in the island nation.

Amir Jawad, a board member for the Jawad Business Group, said the mob smashed windows and caused other damage to the supermarket in what he called a "systematic" series of attacks. The crowds also roamed outside the headquarters of the company, which owns supermarkets, cafes and fast-food outlets.

Jawad said company security guards detained at least two suspected attackers. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

"The vigilantes used iron, steel and wood sticks," he said.

Jawad sites have faced sporadic vandalism since the uprising began in February 2011 in the strategic Gulf nation, which is home to the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet. Bahrain's Shiites account for about 70 percent of the population, but they claim they face widespread discrimination and are kept from top government or military posts.

Nearly 50 people have died in the Arab Spring's longest-running street battles. Apparent Sunni mobs have stepped up reprisals following a blast Monday that injured seven policemen. On Tuesday, Bahrain said four suspects had been arrested in connection with the blast.

In some Shiite areas, apparent Sunni hard-liners carrying knives and sticks staged hit-and-run attacks late Tuesday and set up roadblocks, said witnesses, who spoke on condition of anonymity in fear of receiving pressures from authorities.

The largest Shiite political group, Al Wefaq, claimed that security forces failed to confront the "militias."

Can Pet Dogs and Cats Enrich Children' Lives? - NYTimes.com

In this era of mommy confessionals, I must admit: I am not a pet person. With their allergic father, I have reared three children without benefit of in-house canines, felines or invited rodents.

But with researchers beginning to focus on children and pets, I find myself interested, though occasionally cynical or defensive.

Pediatricians are asked pet-related questions all the time. What?s the right age to care for a pet? The best way to discuss a pet?s demise? Do we get rid of the cat if one child is allergic to him? Will the dog bite the baby?

For such a tremendously widespread phenomenon as pet ownership, there has been very little research to steer by.

But now researchers are looking at a range of questions, in normal child development, in childhood obesity, in traumatized children and in autism. Dogs, you might say, are having their day.

The research is still limited, but the questions are intriguing, as scientists bring rigor to the study of emotional and psychological effects of pet ownership, along with traditional pediatric concerns of allergies, bites and infections.

?There is evidence that some individual kids seem to benefit from their relationship with these animals,? said James Serpell, director of the Center for the Interaction of Animals and Society at the University of Pennsylvania. ?Everyone wants to know what the mechanism is.?

Many families acquire pets in the first place for the children?s sake, said Alan Beck, director of the Center for the Human-Animal Bond at Purdue University. ?Why do you have an animal? A high percentage, because they believe it?s good for the kids ? and it looks like it is, to some degree.?

There?s a common conviction, for instance, that living with a pet teaches children skills they can use in their social interactions with other humans. ?The belief is that maybe animal-owning children are a little bit more aware unconsciously, have learned nonverbal communication,? Dr. Beck said.

Gail F. Melson, emerita professor of human development and family studies at Purdue, cautions that cause and effect may go in the other direction. Maybe children with greater empathy skills are more likely to develop relationships with animals.

The hope that children may learn empathy and communication skills from animals has led to speculation about pets in the lives of people with autism. Some children who have great difficulty with human social interactions can form deep bonds with animals.

?There is some evidence, but it?s largely anecdotal, that bringing a dog into these households has a dramatic effect on the behavior of these kids,? Dr. Serpell said.

Other experts are trying to look objectively at the increasingly widespread practice of using dogs to calm or comfort children in stressful situations, usually medical or legal. Rebecca Johnson, director of the Research Center for Human-Animal Interaction at the University of Missouri, has begun a randomized clinical trial, financed by the National Institutes of Health, of children undergoing forensic interviews for child abuse; some are given a service dog during their interviews, and physiological indicators of stress are measured.

?A lot of cities and municipalities are using service dogs in courtrooms for children,? she said. ?I really want to identify whether it?s a stress reducer or not.?

With so many children struggling with obesity, dog-walking is being investigated as a strategy to increase exercise in children ? as some studies have shown it can do in adults. ?This is a highly motivating physical activity, when children walk with a dog,? Dr. Johnson said.

This is a departure from the scant discussion of pets decades ago among pediatric researchers, who tended to focus on risks. A 1965 commentary in the journal Pediatrics, ?Pets, Parasites, and Pediatrics,? claimed that ?40 fairly frequent infections of children in this country? could be acquired from animals.

And the advice that doctors have given can be based on personal prejudice, not evidence. In a study done in the 1980s of allergists, for example, those doctors who didn?t own pets were more likely to tell the families of allergic children to give up the animals.

The connection between pets and allergies turns out to be particularly complex. Quite a few studies now suggest that early exposure to animals may have a protective effect. A recent review article that examined a large number of studies found evidence that in children with no family history of allergy, those exposed to dogs in the perinatal period may be less likely to develop allergies.

Pets affect so many children in so many ways ? immune systems, developing social skills, exercise patterns, family circumstances. The effects may be positive, but it?s also true that families who choose to add a pet to the mix may be those who feel at least a small margin of comfort in income, living space and ?perhaps above all, as I look at my own deficits ? family organization and infrastructure.

The strongest evidence of the importance of pets, Dr. Melson said, comes from children themselves, who often cite pets as sources of emotional support.

?The animal is available when you come home from school,? she continued. ?Some species will give you at least the illusion of unconditional acceptance ? at least, if you have a treat in your hand.?

At the same time, researchers invoke a range of less quantifiable but clearly important effects. Growing up with a pet ?gives children a much more inclusive sense of self,? Dr. Serpell said. ?I think it has implications for the relationship of people to the other beings on the planet.?

(AP) ? Sony Corp. more than doubled its projected annual loss to 520 billion yen ($6.4 billion), its worst red ink ever, due to a massive tax charge.

With new CEO Kazuo Hirai at its helm, the Japanese electronics company said Tuesday it expects an additional tax expense of 300 billion yen in the fiscal fourth quarter ending March 30. It said this non-cash charge stemmed from revaluing U.S. tax credits that are unlikely to be utilized due to its string of annual losses.

In February, it had projected an annual net loss of 220 billion yen amid weak TV sales, the strong yen and production disruptions from flooding in Thailand.

The company said its operating loss forecast was unchanged at a loss of 95 billion yen ($1.2 billion). It forecast a return to profit in the year through March 2013.

Japanese news reports on Monday said Sony would cut about 10,000 jobs worldwide over the next year as it tries to return to profit, but the company would not confirm that.

This would be the fourth year of red ink for Sony ? a daunting challenge for Hirai, who took over as CEO from Welsh-born Howard Stringer this month. Hirai is due to outline the company's new corporate strategy to journalists on Thursday.

Sony, whose businesses sprawl from cameras and cellphones to PlayStation game consoles and movies such as "The Smurfs," has for years been struggling to regain the swagger and creative flair that made it a dominant force in the global electronics industry in the 1980s and early 1990s.

Free English lessons: Learn English Writing

?For many ESL students learning to write good English is much more difficult than learning to speak. Even advanced level students face this problem. There are a number of reasons for this:

  • Written communication is more formal than spoken communication.
  • You have to avoid grammatical or spelling mistakes in written communication.
  • Spoken communication, on the other hand,?isn't?exactly about grammar: It allows for more grammar mistakes. What?s more, you don?t have to learn spelling to speak.
  • People tend to think while writing; not much thought goes into speaking.

The following points can be helpful when considering how to learn English writing skills:
  • Speaking skills are something that we learn unconsciously. Writing, on the other hand, takes a conscious effort on the part of the learner.
  • Writing involves the learning of a number of rules and structures.

How to improve one?s writing skills

Good writing skills can be developed with practice. The first thing that you need to do is to learn the grammar rules. Although, you can speak without learning much grammar, you won?t be able to write correct sentences if your knowledge of grammar is poor. So if your job involves a lot of writing, there is no excuse for not learning the rules.

Learn different sentence patterns. These are the basic structures that we use to construct sentences. A basic understanding of the most common sentence patterns will help you to write numerous grammatically correct sentences. Keep writing. That is true. Your writing skills improve with practice. Therefore, make it a habit to write at least 200 words a day. Keep a diary. In this digital age, blogging is perhaps better than writing a diary. Participate in online forums where people express their ideas in English.

Simple Tips On How To Lose Weight | Fat Burning Furnace Scam ...

Avoid drinking anything other than water. Coffee with milk and sugar, carbonated soft drinks and fruit juices all contain a lot of calories. Water has zero calories, and can even help you to feel full.

It is very common to find a low-cal version of your favorite snack. Always try and choose options that will lower the calories whenever you go out to eat. Diet soda and light beer are some other low calorie versions of common vices.

Everyone agrees that green tea can be a help. Studies have shown that it aids weight loss and the general functioning of your digestive system. If you do not sweeten your green tea it is as healthy to drink as water. This will help you reach your goals in weight loss.

After you have lost some of your weight, throw away your old clothes. Just open the closet and get rid of them. This can help you to realize the progress that you have made, and serve as inspiration for your future weight loss. It gives you even more of a reason to keep the pounds off.

If your sweet tooth is activated, head straight for the angel food cake. A few cravings are almost impossible to turn your back on. Angel food cakes are very light and fluffy. This kind of cake is lower in calories than other cakes.

Physical activity is an important component in any weight loss plan. Exercising for 30 minutes a day should be your goal. Joining a recreation center can help you exercise in different and fun ways, such as dancing, swimming or playing your favorite sports. This is also a way that you can become introduced to a lot of new people. Often times these people will motivate you to reach your goals.

Weigh yourself on a regular basis to help keep you focused on your goals. The frequency varies from person to person. Weigh yourself around once a week. As a rule, you should try to weigh yourself at least once a day if possible.

Be careful to keep your weight-loss goals in mind when you?re on the job. There are a lot of jobs that require you to sit in a chair at a desk for long periods of time. Try getting up and delivering papers to people instead of using someone else. You will feel better and maintain a healthier weight.

Write down all foods and drinks you consume to track your calories. If you keep notes on everything you eat, the mistakes you make will be more clear to you. Even those few grapes you ate earlier this evening count, and a food diary lets you know just how many calories you are adding to your daily count with such snacks.

The benefits of green tea for weight loss have been proven several times. Green tea is often a strange tasting tea if you are not accustomed to the taste. Add a bit of honey or natural sweetener to make it more palatable. Black tea offers many benefits. It has antioxidants, which aid the body in the removal of toxins as well as giving a boost to the immune system.

Turn losing weight into a completely positive experience by viewing negative things such as the lack of sugary foods as the ways in which you will achieve your goals. For instance, you can focus on short-term and future intentions like resisting dessert or losing two pounds in the next week. If you keep thinking about it, it is bound to happen.

Snap a ?before? photo prior to losing weight. The picture will keep you motivated as you work to accomplish your goals. You can also show before and after pictures to show others what?s possible.

A helpful tip for losing weight is to enjoy a tall glass of milk prior to meals. You will get a sense of fullness by drinking milk that may prevent you from overindulging during a meal. Additionally, milk is full of calcium; this helps with strong bones and muscles.

Don?t forget to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Some of the hunger that you feel may be thirst instead.

Conventional wisdom has long held that drinking significant quantities of water is a great weight loss strategy. Are you aware that cold water will give your metabolism even more of a boost? CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) ? Serena Williams has plenty to keep her busy. There's college classes, a relaunch of her clothing line and a possible move to Paris.

And, oh yeah, there's that brand of dominant tennis that Williams plays like few others in the world.

Williams capped a week of powerful performances with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Lucie Safarova to win the Family Circle Cup on Sunday. It was Williams' 40th WTA title and first on clay in four years since capturing this championship in 2008.

Williams didn't expect to show so strongly in her first event of the season on clay. She said the steady stream of things she deals with off the tennis court helps keep her focused when she's on it.

"I'm just trying to keep my mind busy," Williams said. "I'm doing so much it keeps me staying in the moment."

This week, that's been playing some of the most dominant matches of her career. Williams followed up a 6-1, 6-1 steamroll over Samantha Stosur, the world's fifth-ranked player, in the semifinals Saturday with her rout of Safarova.

Williams said she had some mediocre practices this week, yet saved her best when it counted most.

"I've never played, I can say, consistently at such a high level with low errors" the last two matches, Williams said.

"And the scary thing is," she says, "I could've served so much better."

Really?

Williams was dominant on her serves this week. She wasn't broken in her final four matches, going 25-0 in her service games. The closest Safarova came was in the first set when she couldn't cash in on break points in the third and fifth games. Williams escaped both, getting out of the final jam with a 116 mph service winner to lead 5-0.

Safarova avoided the double-bagel, the 6-0, 6-0 fate she hung on Polona Hercog to reach the final, by taking the fourth game of the second set at love. Safarova pounded a forehand winner to loud applause, smiling and lifting her head in relief.

Williams wrapped it up with a 107-mph ace, her fifth of the match, and received a long ovation from the crowd. She leads the WTA with 108 aces on the season.

"She was amazing," said Safarova, who fell to 0-5 against Williams. "She deserves to be the champion."

Safarova became a Family Circle champion, too, later Sunday, teaming with Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova to win the doubles title over Anabel Medina Garrigues and Yaroslava Shvedova in a third-set tiebreaker.

"It's been wonderful and fun all week," Safarova said.

Williams won her 40th title to move one away from Kim Clijsters among active players on the career list. Venus Williams leads with 43 championships.

Williams said her play was truly a surprise since it was so early in the clay-court season. Her last two finals appearances on the surface both took place in Charleston ? a loss to Justine Henin in 2003 and her win over Vera Zvonareva in 2008.

Williams had just a day or so after the Sony Ericsson Open to practice on the slower clay at the Family Circle Tennis Center. She looked rusty in her opening match, a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Elena Vesnina on Tuesday.

But Williams came back in her next match with a much sharper game. She took out Marina Erakovic 6-2, 6-2 and was in control in her quarterfinals win over Sabine Lisicki, who retired in the first set after twisting her left ankle.

However, Williams was at her best on the weekend.

She didn't give Stosur, the reigning U.S. Open champion, room to breathe in the semifinals. Williams ended the clay-court run with a commanding victory over the 26th-ranked Safarova.

Williams is not scheduled to play again until next month in Madrid, then at the Italian Open before moving on to Paris for the year's second Grand Slam, the French Open.

Williams has talked frequently this week of her desire to add another title at Roland Garros ? her only French crown came in 2002 ? to her Hall-of-Fame resume of 13 major championships. She also talked about moving to Paris.

"Yeah, you know, I love it there. I just ... I need a change," she said. "I'll still be based out of the United States because there's so many tournaments here. So we'll see."

The Family Circle Cup victory may be a launching pad to a great season for Williams, who was sidelined for nearly a year by foot injuries and health issues before returning last summer.

"I really feel like, hopefully, I'll remember this so I can play like this more often," Williams said.

Williams also was happy to honor the 40th anniversary of the Family Circle tournament and the legacy of women's tennis. The tournament named its stadium court on Saturday night for tennis great and pioneer Billie Jean King, who was on court during Williams' trophy ceremony.

King and members of the Original 9 players, who defied the tennis establishment to form the first women's tour and fight for better prize money, were saluted during the weekend

Williams earned $115,000 for the victory, a far cry from the first Family Circle in 1973 ? won by Rosie Casals ? that offered a then-unheard of $100,000 in total prize money.

"I want to thank Billie," Williams said. "Without her, I don't know if any of us would be here."
