Where during the summer, flying, stinging insects were the main cause for concern around your home, the winter brings concern of nesting animals and insects looking for a place to ride out the colder months and breed. As is the case with any unauthorized breeding in your home, this is a concern. These steps, from noted St. Louis Pest Expert Chuck Richardson of Richardson Pest Solutions, will help keep your home free of pests. This third and final part of the tutorial will give you points on the inside of your home. Keeping the infrastructure and access spaces of your home clean and clear of debris, as well as repairing any points of ingress, can be the difference between keeping your home clean if infestation, and squishing spiders underfoot all winter. The first step is to clean out your garage and deck, and any other portals of your home that lead from outside in. These places are often neglected, and become homes for vermin. These homes, when not attended to, give pests like ants, spiders, grubs, beetles and cockroaches all of the time that they need to burrow their way into your home. They are all adept at finding every crack and crevice available in your garage, your deck, and your attics or crawlspaces. Which brings us to the tougher part of the job. Make sure that you seal any cracks that you can find. Remember, any crack in your foundation od siding is like an open invitation to a bug. Anything you can see looks like the grand canyon to a spider, so be very careful, and if you find excessive amounts, don't hesitate to call a professional in to help. It's vital to the sanctity of your home that these pests stay out of your home, and this step helps you seal your home against them. These are just a few of the steps necessary to keeping your home from being infested by vermin during the fall and winter months. If any fail, you can call a pest control specialist like Chuck Richardson at Richardson Pest Control. Visit them today at http://richardsonpestsolutions.com today.

Advertisers Gain Interest-Based Targeting on Twitter

Twitter enhanced its paid products for advertisers today with a new targeting option that includes more than 350 interests. Brands can now target their Promoted Tweets and Promoted Accounts to specific subsets of users based on their interests.

While the auction mechanisms and bidding process remains, the new interest-based targeting parameters are now built into Twitter's dashboard for advertisers. Brands can also create custom interest segments by suggesting a specific user or company account that attracts the same audiences they are trying to reach.

Upon release of the new targeting feature, Twitter also reduced the minimum bid from 50 cents to one cent. The move brings Twitter's minimum advertising prices more in line with other ad platforms and "removes a potential source of friction," said Guy Yalif, head of product marketing at Twitter. "Brands now have the option to target that tweet just to specific audiences."

Through its own algorithms, Twitter extrapolates users' interests from their public tweets. That data is already being used to aggregate custom data for each user in the discover tab and to promote Twitter users that they might want to follow based on similar interests. But this is the first time Twitter has enabled advertisers to target specific users based on those interests.

twitter-categories

At least 20 advertisers, including Bonobos and Walgreens, have been testing interest targeting on Twitter over the past few weeks, said Yalif. Bonobos recently held a 24-hour sale on Twitter with a series of Promoted Tweets that were sent to its followers and similar users, resulting in a 1 to 3 percent average engagement rate.

While those results mirror the average level of engagement Twitter is already achieving through Promoted Tweets, Yalif said he expects that number to fluctuate primarily based on the quality of content. "The audience ends up being very interested and larger," he said. "Here we're seeing significantly enhanced reach while the average engagement rate stays the same."

Kevin Weil, director of product management at Twitter, explained the evolving advertising platform model in a blog post: "Our Promoted Products are auction-based, where winners are determined by engagement rate and bids. Great content matters: if you have engaging Promoted Tweet copy, you can win even if others bid higher. We believe the new lower minimum bid, in combination with interest targeting, will drive greater ROI for every campaign on Twitter."

As more advertisers take advantage of interest targeting, it is the combined use of these new features that will be most powerful for marketers, Yalif said. "Vertical after vertical these interests allow you to align with that vertical and it also allows you to reach users at different stages of their life."

PFT: NFL to start season with replacement refs

Philadelphia Eagles Sign Michael VickGetty Images

In January, Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie strongly hinted that coach Andy Reid is on the hot seat.? During a Thursday press conference, Lurie basically acknowledged it.

Lurie said he would make no decisions about Reid?s contract until after the 2012 season.? With Reid signed through 2013 and with Reid?s agent, Bob LaMonte, already posturing for an extension, Lurie?s words initially seemed to reflect his intentions regarding the question of whether Reid will get a new deal that applies beyond 2013.

As Lurie continued, it became more clear that, depending on 2012, there may be no 2013.

?I expect a substantially improved team,? Lurie said.? ?We all thought we were a lot better than 8-8 and we weren?t.?

This year, 8-8 apparently won?t be good enough to get Reid one more year.? ?We need substantial improvement,? Lurie said.? ?We have a very good team on paper, and paper doesn?t get you that far if you don?t maximize it.?

Lurie explained that there?s no specific level of achievement that will guarantee Reid?s return.? ?You try to make the best judgment you can after the season,? Lurie said.

There will be no formula regarding the right decision.? ?It?ll be very clear,? Lurie said.

While Lurie acknowledged that another 8-8 season could be excused by a rash of injuries, he reiterated that, generally, ?8-8 is unacceptable . . . that was a really unacceptable outcome.?

Thus, regardless of how it all turns out, Reid is officially on notice.? And Lamonte?s assertion that Lurie essentially has promised Reid a job for life has been completely debunked.

Whether Reid returns for a 15th season depends directly on how the 14th season unfolds.

AMAZON: We're Sold Out Of The Kindle Fire - Business Insider

In a somewhat unusual press release Amazon announced that it sold out of its $200 tablet, the Kindle Fire.

In the release, CEO Jeff Bezos says, "Kindle Fire is sold out, but we have an exciting roadmap ahead?we will continue to offer our customers the best hardware, the best prices, the best customer service, the best cross-platform interoperability, and the best content ecosystem."

He appears to be saying Amazon will not make any more Kindle Fires, at least not the current model.

Amazon is hosting a special media event one week from today where it's expected to announce the next wave of Kindle Fires and e-readers. If Amazon is sold out of Fires, it would follow that the next tablets will be available for sale right away.

In Amazon's release it says it captured 22% of the tablet market in the U.S. over the last nine months. Its cheap tablet was appealing to people who didn't want to pay $400-$500 for the iPad. But Amazon now faces competition from Google with the Nexus 7, and Apple is reportedly going to release an iPad Mini which will compete with the Kindle Fire.

Amazon will have to make the next generation of the Kindle Fire significantly better if it wants to compete with Google and Apple.

Here's the full release:

Less than one year ago, Amazon introduced Kindle Fire?combining 15 years of innovation into a single, fully-integrated, end-to-end service for customers. Kindle Fire quickly became the most successful product launch in the history of Amazon.com, earning over 10,000 5-star customer reviews, and is the #1 best-selling product across the millions of items available on Amazon since its introduction 48 weeks ago. Today, Amazon announced that Kindle Fire is sold out, and that in just nine months, Kindle Fire has captured 22% of tablet sales in the U.S.

?We?re grateful to the millions of customers who have made Kindle Fire the most successful product launch in the history of Amazon,? said Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com Founder and CEO. ?This has been a big year for digital products on Amazon?all of the top 10 sellers on Amazon.com since Kindle Fire launched just less than a year ago are digital products. Kindle Fire is sold out, but we have an exciting roadmap ahead?we will continue to offer our customers the best hardware, the best prices, the best customer service, the best cross-platform interoperability, and the best content ecosystem.?

Kindle Fire offers customers a vast selection of digital content?over 22 million movies, TV shows, apps, games, books, magazines and more?in one seamless, end-to-end experience, making it easy for customers to browse, discover and purchase. Since Kindle Fire launched last September, all of the top 10 products on Amazon?across all products?are digital products.

Sweet building blocks of life found around young star

Wednesday, August 29, 2012

Life is made up of a series of complex organic molecules, including sugars. A team of astronomers led by researchers from the Niels Bohr Institute, have now observed a simple sugar molecule in the gas surrounding a young star and this discovery proves that the building blocks of life were already present during planet formation. The results have been published in the scientific journal Astrophysical Journal Letters.

The star was observed with the new large international telescope, Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) in northern Chile. The ALMA telescopes are able to zoom in and study the details of newly formed stars and their rotating discs of dust and gas, which subsequently clumps together and forms planets. Among other things, the astronomers would like to investigate the gas for the presence of water vapour and examine the chemical composition for complex molecules.

Sugar around new stars

"In the protoplanetary disc of gas and dust surrounding the young, newly formed star, we found glycolaldehyde molecules, which are a simple form of sugar. It is one of the building blocks in the process that leads to the formation of RNA and the first step in the direction of biology," explains astrophysicist Jes J?rgensen, Associate Professor at the Niels Bohr Institute and the Centre for Star and Planet Formation at the University of Copenhagen.

He explains that at first the gas and dust cloud is extremely cold (only around 10 degrees above absolute zero at minus 273 degrees C) and simple gases such as carbon monoxide and methane settle on particles of dust and solidify as ice. Here on the particles of dust, the otherwise volatile gases come close to each other and can bond together and form more complex molecules. When the star has been formed in the middle of the gas and dust cloud, it emits heat, and the inner parts of the rotating cloud surrounding the star is heated to around room temperature, after which the chemically complex molecules on the particles of dust evaporate as gas. This gas emits radiation as radio waves at low frequencies and it is this radiation that researchers can observe with the ALMA telescopes.

Precursors for biology before planets

The star is located only 400 light years from us ? so, seen in an astronomical context, it is right in our own neighbourhood. With the very high resolution of the new telescopes, researchers now have the opportunity to study the details of the dust and gas clouds, and in addition to the sugar molecules the researchers also saw signs of a number of other complex organic molecules, including ethylene-glycol, methyl-formate and ethanol.

"The complex molecules in the cloud surrounding the newly formed star tell us that the building blocks of life may be among the first formed. One of the big questions is whether it is common that these organic molecules are formed so early in the star and planet formation process ? and how complex they can become before they are incorporated into new planets. This could potentially tell us something about the possibility that life might arise elsewhere and whether precursors to biology are already present before the planets have been formed," explains Jes J?rgensen.

Khondakar Golam Mowla Presents Analysis on the Prediction of the Occupy Movement

Wealth inequality is but one aspect of European imperialism and usury, claims author Khondakar Golam Mowla in new book ?The Judgment Against Imperialism, Fascism and Racism Against Caliphate and Islam?.

Austin, TX (PRWEB) August 29, 2012

According to author Khondakar Golam Mowla, ?the present Occupy Wall Street movement is nothing but the revolution started by Prophet Jesus (Peace be upon him) about 2000 years ago when he drove money exchangers who were doing interest/usury-based business from the Temple Mount/al-Aqsa Mosque/Dome of the Rock.? In his new book ?The Judgment Against Imperialism, Fascism and Racism Against Caliphate and Islam: Volume 1? (published by AuthorHouse), he seeks to clear up misunderstandings about Islam while indicting nations that have oppressed their Muslim populations.

In this well-researched and comprehensive book, Mowla makes strong allegations about the structure of nations worldwide and provides extensive evidence to warrant these claims. Mowla also seeks to vindicate the honor of Muslims worldwide through historical fact and encourage the establishment of the Caliphate, the head of the Muslim community.

Citing statistics from the World Institute for Development of Economics Research of the United Nations University in 2000: ?[The study] found the richest one percent of adults owned 40 percent of global assets in the year 2000, and that the richest 10 percent of adults accounted for 85 percent of the world?s total,? Mowla writes. ?In contrast, the assets of half of the world?s adult population account for barely one percent of global wealth.? These statistics point to an extreme degree of inequality around the world, as has been further illustrated by the current Occupy movement. Further questioning the reasoning and justice behind a one world order, Mowla writes, ?Who will bomb those who are responsible for the usury based world economy instead of bombing the birthplace of the Prophet Abraham (i.e.: Iraq) and the genocide occurring in Iraq, Afghanistan, northern Pakistan and all Arab countries??

Mowla goes on to question the ethics and justification behind current world politics and economics as it applies to the oppression of the Muslim world by the Western world, especially in regards to the Caliphate. In ?The Judgment Against Imperialism, Fascism and Racism Against Caliphate and Islam?, Mowla writes:

?This book is based on following address of the Right Hon. Syed Ameer Ali, the first Muslim as well the first Indian, to be member of British Privy Council, on Islam in the League of Nations in 1919. His speech is summary of my book. He was greatest Judge of Indian subcontinent (present India, Pakistan and Bangladesh) during his life time and as such no one must argue against the necessity of Caliphate. He was not a Terrorist, the ill word which is used against present Muslims who ever try to use or work or struggle (Jihad, peaceful Jihad without war, killing and destruction) in favor of the word Caliph or Caliphate. Let mankind decide which is right or wrong for mankind in general and World Muslims in particular. I documented all historical fact, truth and only truth in this book from all kind of sources and as such this book is not a story telling or myth, but fact of history for those who has some morality to Judge between wrong and right, between bad and good and between war, killing destruction of wealth and permanent peace for all mankind. The Caliph/Khalifah is the spiritual leader; unless there is a Caliph/Khalifah the Muslim prayers are not valid according to Right Hon. Syed Ameer Ali as he mentioned during his speech on Islam in the League of Nations in 1919. Thus there is no nationalism in Islam like Iraq or Saudi Arab or Egypt etc. as all are part of one nation, Caliphate/Khilafah?.

What To Look For In An Elderly Care Facility. - Health And Fitness ...

Are you in a position where it?s become necessary to arrange for aging care? It doesn?t matter if the place is for yourself or someone you adore, finding the proper aging care facility is really important. Here are a glance at some of the different aging care options and the way to choose the right facility for your requirements. Keep in mind that long term care insurance can help defray the cost.

Remember that if you?re choosing a health care facility or care system for a friend, you must be practical. It can be hard to accurately view the health wants of a parent or relative since you would like to think they are capable and in good health. But ignoring the requirements of certain medical problems, whether the wandering tendencies of an Alzheimer?s patient or the tremors of an individual with Parkinson?s can actually do them harm.

Do you like the concept of staying in your own home? Consider a care supplier who will come in and help look after your requirements. Think about the precise desires you?ll want met, and the home itself. If mobility is a difficulty, somebody may need to move to a home with no stairs. If you cannot lift, consider having help with your housework and yard work. You need to think meticulously about the different things you want to do round the house and ensure that these are looked after in order to make living at home as successful as possible.

You?ll look at a retirement residence as a good transition from your home. You want to ensure that the facility you select has activities you may enjoy and enough privacy and independence that you?re going to feel at home there. Look at this place as somewhere you?ll want to live for a long time. Medicare strategies and advances in hospital treatment can keep you around for years to come.

You could be forced to take a look at a care home to take care of your precise health needs . If you are picking a facility for a friend or family member, you need to make sure that the residents are healthy and well cared for. The cost of these facilities could be high, and there should be signs that the money is returning to the patients and getting used to benefit them, as well as improve the facility. Look for a facility that can accommodate you or the one that you love?s particular challenges and needs . Is there in house physiotherapy and routine medical check-ups? These can be significant things to think about when picking a facility.

If the one that you love is really ill you could be forced to consider palliative care. This is often a harrowing decision since, by admitting palliative care is needed you are admitting that there?s not much to no chance the one you love will get better. Palliative care arrangements should still make sure that your beloved is well cared for and that there?s mental or physical kick when that is possible . Remember that you never know how long the one you love has left so you need to plan for them to be as cosy as practical for as long they can.

By asking questions and ensuring that the facility you choose meets the needs and life-style of your loved one, you will find the best aging care available. New facilities are being built on a regular basis and as technological and medical advances continue the future has never looked better.

Before you go out and buy a policy go to long term care insurance. We represent 20 of the top LTCi providers. This gives you tremendous options.

What is Corporate Class?
A group of mutual funds structured as a corporation rather than a trust. This enables investors to make investment decisions without being affected by tax concerns and allows them to benefit from tax deferral and increased compound growth over the long term.

How can it be used

  • To minimize or eliminate annual distributions.
  • To receive tax-efficient capital gains or Canadian dividends from traditional income funds.
  • To rebalance your portfolio on a regular basis without triggering capital gains or losses.
  • To potentially lower your taxes, because you can defer them and choose when to realize capital gains.
  • To allow for tax-efficient charitable donation planning.
  • To preserve or increase income-tested government benefits.

Who uses it?

  • Any investor with non-registered assets should consider Corporate Class, especially if you:
    • have maximized your tax-free savings account contributions
    • are a higher-income earner who has maximized your RRSPs
    • or are worried about clawbacks to your Old Age Security or other income-tested government benefits.
  • A corporation with investable assets.

Corporate Class Case Study

Janet and Paul have been investing their money for the past 10 years and have built a sizeable non-registered portfolio. Their account is a conservative, balanced portfolio with a mix of interest income, dividends and capital gains making up the return. However, the yields they are receiving, on an after-tax basis, are not providing the returns they hoped for. Janet and Paul are concerned that they will have to pursue a potentially riskier investment strategy in order to obtain higher after-tax returns.

The Solution

Janet and Paul invest in Corporate Class investment funds. By doing so they are able to minimize distributions, receive tax-efficient capital gains or Canadian dividends from income funds, reduce their tax bill and increase their after-tax returns. Furthermore, as Janet and Paul?s investment objectives change, they can rebalance their portfolio inside the corporation without realizing any taxable capital gains. The power of tax-deferred compounding is illustrated in the graph where Janet and Paul could save $35,000 in taxes over 30 years on an initial investment of $50,000. When they retire, Corporate Class could reduce clawbacks of their Old Age Security and trim their annual tax bill. Ultimately, Janet and Paul not only save taxes, but are also able to build a considerable nest egg to leave their children and grandchildren.

Pretend play may not be as crucial to child development as believed, new study shows

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? Pretend play can be fun for preschool children, but a new University of Virginia study, published in the current online edition of the journal Psychological Bulletin, finds that it is not as crucial to a child's development as currently believed. Pretend play is any play a child engages in, alone, with playmates, or with adults, that involves uses of the imagination to create a fantasy world or situation, such as making toy cars go "vrrooooom" or making dolls talk.

Based on a number of key studies over four decades, pretend play is widely considered by psychologists -- and teachers and parents -- to be a vital contributor to the healthy development of children's intellect.

However, the new U.Va. study -- a thorough review of more than 150 studies -- looked for clearly delineated contributions of pretend play to children's mental development, and found little or no correlation.

Much of the previously presented "evidence" for the vitality of pretend play to development is derived from flawed methodology, according to Angeline Lillard, the new study's lead author and a U.Va. professor of psychology in the College of Arts & Sciences. She said testers might have been biased by knowledge that they were testing children who had engaged in adult-directed pretend play prior to testing.

"We found no good evidence that pretend play contributes to creativity, intelligence or problem-solving," Lillard said. "However, we did find evidence that it just might be a factor contributing to language, storytelling, social development and self-regulation."

She said it is often difficult for psychologists to separate whether children who engage in pretend play are already creative and imaginative, or if the pretend play, often encouraged by parents or teachers, actually promotes development.

"When you look at the research that has been done to test that, it comes up really short," Lillard said. "It may be that we've been testing the wrong things; and it may well be that when a future experiment is really well done we may find something that pretend play does for development, but at this point these claims are all overheated. This is our conclusion from having really carefully read the studies."

Lillard emphasized that various elements often present during pretend play -- freedom to make choices and pursue one's own interests, negotiation with peers and physical interaction with real objects -- are valuable, especially with appropriate levels of adult guidance.

These conditions exist both in pretend play and in other playful preschool activities that encourage children to discover their own interests and talents, such as the method used in Montessori schools.

Pretend play is also important diagnostically for children between 18 months and 2 years old, Lillard said. A complete absence of pretend play among children of that narrow age range could indicate autism, and suggests that such children be evaluated for other signs of the neurological disorder.

A growing problem, she said, is a trend in schools toward intensively preparing children for tests -- often supplanting organized and informal playtime, leading to a debate over whether early childhood curricula should include materials and time for pretend play.

"Playtime in school is important," Lillard said. "We found evidence that -- when a school day consists mostly of sitting at desks listening to teachers -- recess restores attention and that physical exercise improves learning."

Regarding pretend play, she said, "If adults enjoy doing it with children, it provides a happy context for positive adult-child interaction, a very important contributor to children's healthy development."

Stephen Hinshaw, editor of Psychological Bulletin and a professor of psychology at the University of California at Berkeley, said, "The article by Lillard and colleagues is a game-changer -- a paragon of carefully-reasoned evidence that will challenge the play-based domination of the early-childhood field for years to come."

Lillard's graduate student co-authors are Rebecca Dore, Emily Hopkins, Matthew Lerner, Carrie Palmquist and Eric Smith.

Practices for a Healthy Mind: 3 Disability Friendly Vacations for the ...

When we hear the terms health and fitness, most of us immediately think about flattening stomachs and running for miles. While this is certainly one aspect of good health and fitness, it is not the entire picture. Physical health and mental health go hand in hand in a lot of ways, but many people underestimate the importance of mental health exercises. Sometimes the best medicine for a busy, anxious, and stressed mind is a break. Vacations can be some of the best health practices we can try out?just as important as healthy meals and exercise. Mental health can especially be a worry for individuals unable to exercise the way they would like. Disabilities can plague a healthy mind and make vacationing more of a stress than a relief.
There are many challenges faced by individuals and families living with a disability. Even everyday things like getting around the house or planning your next family vacation can become a struggle. While things can become more challenging when faced with a disability, a comfortable and ?normal? life is entirely possible. Families living with a disabled loved one have to realize that anything is possible with only a little extra forethought.

My mother became restricted to a wheelchair when I was still very young. As a child, I remember family vacations becoming a stressor as we adjusted to living as a family with a handicapable mother. Soon we, as a family and unit, learned new ways to travel, new destinations to explore, and new ways to get around. Looking back now, working as a family to find vacations we could all take and participate in fully brought us closer together and made each of us healthier in mind and body. Here are three classic family vacations made entirely handicap accessible?and fun!

The Beach
Going to the beach with a disabled family member is likely one of the last summer destinations that comes to mind. When we think beach vacation, we picture choppy waves, sand in every crevice, and long hours in the sun?not necessarily the most handicap-inviting setting. However, today there are many beaches that have made their crystal waters and sandy lounging accessible to all. Hanauma Bay in Honolulu offers beach wheelchairs free of charge to any visitors that need them. The wheelchairs are available year round and offer access directly into the water. The Bay is also designed to be extremely wheelchair and mobility challenged friendly with various ramps and facilities. The tram to and from the beach can also accommodate wheelchairs. While Hanauma Bay is a prime example of a handicap accessible beach, there are numerous others around the world as well.

The Theme Park
Morgan?s Wonderland in San Antonio, Texas boasts the title of the world?s first Ultra Accessible Family Fun Park?. Every ride and activity in the park is 100 percent handicap accessible. There are over 30 different traditional, adaptive, and wheelchair swings at the park along with several other rides and activities. Nothing says summertime and summer vacation better than going to a theme park, riding an amusement ride, and eating carnival food. At times, the thought of manning a wheelchair in a busy and crowded theme park can seem stressful and overwhelming. But, many theme parks offer excellent accommodations for disabled patrons.

The Campout
As a kid, my absolute favorite family summer vacation was camping out and spending time with nature. As a family, we would pack up our minivan every year and head out to the nearest national park. Camping and heading out into the wilderness is another activity many people don?t traditionally think of doing with a disabled family member. While it does take a little more planning and forethought, camping out can be a great summer trip for any family, including those with disabled members. Rocky Mountain National Park is a wonderful summer destination full of mountains, rivers, lakes, wildlife, and so much more. Moreover, the park offers several different ways for disabled visitors to see everything nature has to offer. Check this site for the trail and camping accessibility for disabled visitors. The park offers tons of fully accessible trails, camping spots, lookouts, bathrooms, and much more.

Having her fair share of construction management jobs, Kristie Lewis considers herself an expert on the subject and regularly writes about it on http://constructionmanagementdegree.org. She is particularly interested in how construction knowledge can help those with disabilities and the ?green? movement. Send your questions and feedback to Kristie at Kristie.lewis81@gmail.com.

Working moms spend less time daily on kids' diet, exercise, study finds

Tuesday, August 28, 2012

When it comes to cooking, grocery shopping and playing with children, American moms with full-time jobs spend roughly three-and-half fewer hours per day on these and other chores related to their children's diet and exercise compared to stay-at-home and unemployed mothers, reports a new paper by a Cornell University health economist.

Male partners do little to make up the deficit: Employed fathers devote just 13 minutes daily to such activities and non-working fathers contribute 41 minutes, finds the study, which will be printed in the December issue of Economics and Human Biology.

The findings are consistent across socio-economic lines measured by the mothers' education, family income, race and ethnicity.

To make up for this time deficit, working mothers are significantly more likely to spend time purchasing prepared foods ? takeout from restaurants or prepackaged, ready-to-eat meals from grocery stores ? which are generally less nutritious than home-cooked meals.

"It's inaccurate to pin rising childhood obesity rates on women, given that husbands pick up so little of the slack," cautioned lead author John Cawley, professor of policy analysis and management and of economics at Cornell's College of Human Ecology.

The study does not prove that employment alone drives the way mothers spends their time. "For example, mothers who choose to work might be those who enjoy cooking less and who would cook less whether working or not," Cawley said.

He added that working mothers produce additional benefits for children such as more money to provide for family needs.

"It's important to remember that we can take steps to enhance childhood nutrition and physical activity without advocating that women exit the workforce," Cawley said. For instance, the authors argue, parents should be better educated about the nutritional content of restaurant and prepackaged foods. "In order to make more informed decisions, consumers need to have nutrition and calorie information available where they buy their food," said Cawley, who noted that federal health care reform rules will soon require chain and fast-food restaurants nationwide to post calorie counts of the foods they sell.

Cawley noted that schools shoulder a greater burden for supporting healthy lifestyles.

"Our findings underscore the importance of schools offering high-quality foods and physical education classes," he said. "In general, the Institute of Medicine and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are urging comprehensive changes in school environments to promote healthy eating and active living."

6 Facts about Forex Trading that You Should Know - Financial ...

Since 1970 the online accessibility of Forex trading has improved. This has resulted in making it quite popular among the tradersand investors around the world. Though it is considered quite a profitable business many traders suffer losses due to lack of proper knowledge about its implementation. So if you are looking forward to business opportunities in Forex Trading there are a few factsthat you need to know. Even if you are into the business for quite some time this information might prove useful.

Given below are some of the basic facts that you should know about Forex Trading. Consider taking a look at these few facts to avoid any mistakes:

  1. Keep a track of the major currencies: Due to changes in the global economic state the major currencies often go through value changes. If you are dealing in Forex it is very important that you keep a track of the ups and downs of the currencies every day. It will help you to understand the market prices well and fix the deals better.
  2. Know the profit making tricks: Many think that in Forex Trading the profits are only made when the value of currencyappreciates. But at times profits are also made due to depreciation in currency value. You also need to know how to deal with the leverage as the leverage in Forex is higher than any other market. By dealing with it successfully you can earn good profits. But if your funds are minimal do take extra care while dealing with leverage as it can have opposite effects.
  3. Flexible trading hours available: One of the most important advantages about Forex trading is that it can be accessed 24 hours a day from Monday morning to Saturday afternoon. As the trading time is more you can access it whenever you think is the right time. Such trading hours are available due to the presence of various time zones in the world. The availability of such tradinghours makes it easier for traders who want to work at their own ease.
  4. Easy filling procedures: The procedures to filling orders are easy and are devoid of any delay. As most of the time the liquidity in the market is high you can fill the orders at your own will. The time limit is not a factor and you can do the business withtraders who are willing to work at flexible hours. The presence of an extensive market and its easy operation makes this possible.
  5. Absence of any complicated work ethics: The Forex trading markets do not involve much work ethics unlike the other markets. The age old saying that if you work hard you will succeed is not followed in Forex trading. This is because the profits are not guaranteed and just the fact that you have worked hard does not imply that you will get profits. Forex Trading is more about smart work than hard work.
  6. No fixed formula for success: Many people think that Forex Trading has a close relation with mathematics and by following some fixed formulas you can get success. However the view is absurd as no mathematical formula is required to achieve success in Forex. You need to follow the trade closely and be smart at handling the trade. Different traders have different way of working and there is no such fixed formula that can get you only success. The success is completely dependent on your proficiency as a trader.

PFT: Vick insists he's not injury-prone

Brandon Brooks, Derek NewtonAP

After the Texans surprisingly cut right tackle Eric Winston in the offseason, it was assumed that veteran Rashad Butler, acquired in 2007 on waivers from the Panthers, would get the job.

Assume again.

Coach Gary Kubiak said Monday that Derek Newton, a seventh-round pick in 2001, has won the spot at the top of the depth chart.

?Looking at the body of work, I think it was very, very close, as I told y?all all along,? Kubiak said in comments transcribed and distributed by the team.? ?I think the thing that has moved this toward Newton is watching his progress, watching where he was the end of last year going to the offseason, going through camp, watching him get better and better and better.? Did a good job the other night.? Young player that we think?s ascending.? We know that there?s a lot of things he?s got to clean up, but we think he?s definitely committed to doing that, just like the way he?s progressed.? So we?ll give him an opportunity to do it.? Big responsibility but we think he?s ready for it.?

Kubiak credited offensive line coach John Benton for developing the team?s linemen.? ?He?s taken, you go back to [Mike)]Brisiel, free agent, we go get Chris [Myers], [Benton] comes in here and Chris becomes a Pro Bowl center.? Wade [Smith] coming in here as a free agent.? Some of the work that John has done since his stay here in Houston has been exceptional.?

?This is a big opportunity for me,? a smiling Newton said.? ?Coming from a small school, two years of high school [football].? Coming from a small town, not many people make it, but the grind, it was tough.? I had a lot of friends [and] a lot of family support back home and they helped me get through it.?

The Texans have extra-high hopes for Newton, who appeared in 14 regular-season games as a rookie, with no starts.

?We watch him play each week and we just see things that give him a chance to be a great player, not just a good player,? Kubiak said.

The Texans had one of the best offensive lines in football last season, blowing open running lanes with a zone-blocking scheme and protecting the quarterback in a West Coast passing attack that often rolls the quarterback out.? This year, 40 percent of that line is being replaced.

Apple promotes pair of execs to Senior VP level, Bob Mansfield to hang around after all

Bob Mansfield of AppleIt's a day of upheaval in the boardroom at Apple -- in the good sense. Remember how Hardware Engineering Senior VP Bob Mansfield said he would retire in June? He's had a change of heart and will keep working on future products. Meanwhile, two of the vice presidents who've been mainstays of Apple's recent plans, Mac Software Engineering VP Craig Federighi and Hardware Engineering VP Dan Riccio, have been promoted to Senior VP. All three will report directly to CEO Tim Cook, and both Federighi as well as Riccio will get their first turns at Apple's executive management team. While the shift isn't going to signal a dramatic change in strategy, it's notable that Riccio's role is expanding: he's moving from his earlier iPad focus to overseeing all the hardware Apple makes. We can only guess at what the ultimate goals might be for the new assignments, although we can imagine Apple jumping through hoops to keep a hardware executive as skilled as Mansfield on its side.

Merging the biological and the electronic

Monday, August 27, 2012

Harvard scientists have, for the first, time created a type of "cyborg" tissue by embedding a three-dimensional network of functional, bio-compatible nanoscale wires into engineered human tissues.

As described in a paper published August 26 in Nature Materials, a multi-institutional research team led by Charles M. Lieber, the Mark Hyman, Jr. Professor of Chemistry at Harvard and Daniel Kohane, a Harvard Medical School professor in the Department of Anesthesia at Children's Hospital Boston developed a system for creating nanoscale "scaffolds" which could be seeded with cells which later grew into tissue.

Also contributing to the work were Robert Langer, from the Koch Institute at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Zhigang Suo, the Allen E. and Marilyn M. Puckett Professor of Mechanics and Materials at Harvard's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

"The current methods we have for monitoring or interacting with living systems are limited," said Lieber. "We can use electrodes to measure activity in cells or tissue, but that damages them. With this technology, for the first time, we can work at the same scale as the unit of biological system without interrupting it. Ultimately, this is about merging tissue with electronics in a way that it becomes difficult to determine where the tissue ends and the electronics begin."

The research addresses a concern that has long been associated with work on bioengineered tissue ? how to create systems capable of sensing chemical or electrical changes in the tissue after it has been grown and implanted. The system might also represent a solution to researchers' struggles in developing methods to directly stimulate engineered tissues and measure cellular reactions.

"In the body, the autonomic nervous system keeps track of pH, chemistry, oxygen and other factors, and triggers responses as needed," Kohane explained. "We need to be able to mimic the kind of intrinsic feedback loops the body has evolved in order to maintain fine control at the cellular and tissue level."

Using the autonomic nervous system as inspiration, Bozhi Tian, a former doctoral student under Lieber and former postdoctoral fellow in the Kohane and Langer labs, and collaborator Jia Liu worked in Lieber's lab at Harvard to build mesh-like networks of nanoscale silicon wires?about 30 - 80 nm in diameter?shaped like flat planes or in a reticular conformation.

The process of building the networks, Lieber said, is similar to that used to etch microchips.

Beginning with a two-dimensional substrate, researchers laid out a mesh of organic polymer around nanoscale wires, which serve as the critical nanoscale sensing elements. Nanoscale electrodes, which connect the nanowire elements, were then built within the mesh to enable nanowire transistors to measure the activity in cells without damaging them. Once complete, the substrate was dissolved, leaving researchers with a net-like sponge or a mesh that can be folded or rolled into a host of three dimensional shapes.

Once complete, the networks were porous enough to allow the team to seed them with cells and encourage those cells to grow in 3D cultures.

"Previous efforts to create bioengineered sensing networks have focused on two-dimensional layouts, where culture cells grow on top of electronic components, or on conformal layouts where probes are placed on tissue surfaces," said Tian. "It is desirable to have an accurate picture of cellular behavior within the 3D structure of a tissue, and it is also important to have nanoscale probes to avoid disruption of either cellular or tissue architecture."

Using heart and nerve cells, the team successfully engineered tissues containing embedded nanoscale networks without affecting the cells' viability or activity. Using the embedded devices, they were able to detect electrical signals generated by cells deep within the tissue, and to measure changes in those signals in response to cardio- or neuro-stimulating drugs.

Researchers were also able to construct bioengineered blood vessels, and used the embedded technology to measure pH changes ? as would be seen in response to inflammation, ischemia and other biochemical or cellular environments ? both inside and outside the vessels.

Though a number of potential applications exist for the technology, the most near-term use, Lieber said, may come from the pharmaceutical industry, where researchers could use the technology to more precisely study how newly-developed drugs act in three dimensional tissues, rather than thin layers of cultured cells. The system might also one day be used to monitor changes inside the body and react accordingly, whether through electrical stimulation or the release of a drug.

What Mitt Romney needs to achieve at GOP national convention

Mitt Romney needs to keep the focus on the travails of the US economy under Obama, and to humanize himself by telling his personal story, Republican analysts said during the Sunday talk shows, in advance of this week's GOP national convention.

Mitt Romney?s task at the Republican National Convention this week will be to keep the focus on the struggles of the US economy under President Obama and to tell an appealing personal story about his life and accomplishments, according to conservative politicos and commentators speaking during appearances on the Sunday talk shows.

Mr. Romney will also strive, they said, to steer the conversation clear of political land mines such as the recent "legitimate rape" comment by Rep. Todd Akin (R) of Missouri.

Mr. Romney will show he?s ?a good, decent man who gave away his father?s inheritance, and everything he did, he did to success,? said Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus on CBS?s "Face the Nation." ?I think both Republican and Democratic parents are wishing for their kids' success and the American dream and not the glass-half-empty America that President Obama is trying to sell this country."

Recent polling data show the vast distance Romney needs to make up against Mr. Obama in terms of connecting with voters.

An NBC/Wall Street Journal poll conducted in August shows Obama with a 58 percent to 23 percent lead in being judged ?easygoing and likable,? a 52 to 24 percent lead in issues concerning women, and, perhaps most important, a 52 percent to 30 percent advantage in being perceived as caring about average people.

A step toward introducing Mitt Romney, Family Man, was evident in a joint interview of Mitt and Ann Romney aired on "Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace."

The couple laughed often, with Mitt looking on admiringly as Ann answered several sharp questions from Mr. Wallace about her political disagreements with her husband (she demurred) and their feelings about Planned Parenthood (to which Ann had donated in the past and which Mitt has said would lose its federal funding under a Romney administration.)

The two shared a big laugh when Ann said she didn?t weigh in on policy matters.

?I didn?t know she didn?t give advice on policy,? Mitt said with a broad smile.

Ann Romney even offered her advice for shopping at bulk retailer Costco: ?You take a sharp right, go way down to the back of the store, shop the outside of the aisles.?
