Conrad Smith, the chief operating officer of the WNBA?s Minnesota Lynx, lost his three-year battle with brain cancer on Wednesday.
Smith spent 27 years in professional sports and had a long resume that included working in corporate sales for the Minnesota North Stars NHL team, director of corporate sales for the Minnesota Twins and vice president of new business development for the Minnesota Timberwolves and Lynx. He assumed the mantle as the chief operating officer for the Minnesota Lynx on Nov. 19, 2008.
As the team?s COO, Smith oversaw the Lynx ticket sales, corporate sponsorships, marketing, advertising, public relations and other business needs during the team?s successful 2011 season which culminated in a WNBA championship and the 2012 season which led to another trip to the WNBA Finals.
Smith was always known to have a warm smile when he worked the arena floor shaking hands with fans, employees and members of the media. His silver hair was cropped short, and was not long enough to cover the scars from his surgery, which served as a vivid reminder of his personal struggle. Through it all, he kept a positive attitude and treated people kindly as the consummate professional that he was.
Smith was with the Minnesota Twins when they won their last World Series in 1991 and was the Lynx COO in 2011 when they brought home the first professional sports championship since then.
?It?s obviously very, very special. I was part of the last championship in this town 20 years ago to the month in fact with the Twins,? he said in October 2011 after the Lynx championship. ?I was very fortunate to go through that experience, and 20 years is a long time between championships.?
He is survived by his wife, Carla, and three children.
