Football coach alligator prank backfires, handler gets munched

An American football coach saw a prank on his team involving a live alligator backfire when the reptile attacked its wrangler.

Mark Dantonio attempted to amuse his Michigan State players by bringing the beast to a training session in Florida.

He intended to have a professional handler dressed as a member of the team run in and wrestle with the animal, but disaster struck when the alligator expert slipped and ended up getting his leg chomped.

"We always build a theme around the football season a little bit," Dantonio told the Detroit Free Press. "One of our themes has been listening to Muhammad Ali videos, when he talks about getting ready to fight George Foreman or whatever.

"He talks about doing new things, he's been chopping down trees, he's been tussling with the whale, he's done wrestled an alligator.

"We're trying to make life moments down here. We wanted to do something they'll remember the rest of their life. I think they'll remember that one."

The handler was released from the alligator without receiving any significant injuries.
