A 7-year-old girl is fighting for her life Saturday night after she and her father were shot during an apparent home invasion in Elkhart Friday.
Around 10:45 Friday night, police were called to the family's home in the 700 block of Kilbourn Street on the city's west side.
According to a family member, 7-year-old Kristyana Jackson and her mother had just come home from Elkhart Memorial's football game, when two or three men wearing handkerchiefs approached them.
The father was inside the home at the time and tried to protect his family, but was shot several times in the process.
Kristyana was shot in the head.
"Children are our greatest blessings and to know that such a precious child who only has love and good things to do in this world is a victim of something so random, I am so angry right now," said Kristyana's former teacher Carla Darr.
Kristyana's father was taken to an Elkhart hospital where he was treated in released.
Kristyana she was rushed to South Bend.
The 7-year-old underwent emergency surgery for brain swelling Friday night.
She remains in critical condition.
"I hope they find the people that did this," said neighbor David Perry. "Whatever happened over there we don't know yet, but no 7-year-old girl should be involved in this in any sort of way."
Police are searching for the suspects, but don't have much information about their appearances.
As neighbors wait for news of an arrest, they're hoping Kristyana makes a full recovery.
"We have your seat waiting for you back at school, we know you're going to be back there soon," Darr said. "Your friends miss you and your teachers miss you and we know you're going to come back and sit in that seat and continue to learn."
Anyone with information is asked to call the Elkhart Police Department at 295-7070.
